If you're a fan of Asian cuisine, a wok is a must have kitchen tool. Like many of your more delicate cooking utensils, it requires special care. Unfortunately, improper cleaning and seasoning can lead to rusting and other unwanted side effects. To help keep your wok in its best possible condition, follow the cleaning and seasoning tips we've listed below.
How to Clean Your New Wok
- If you've recently purchased a new wok, you'll need to start off by giving it a good wash with hot soapy water to remove any oils left over from the manufacturing process.
- Once you've given it a good cleaning, dry it off with a paper towel and set it down on one of your stove burners. Turn the burner to medium heat and pour vegetable oil into the wok. With a paper towel, completely cover the surface of the wok with the oil until it becomes hot. Next, remove the wok from the burner and rinse it with hot water. Your last step is to simply dry the pan off with a paper towel.
How to Clean Your Wok After Cooking in it
- Cleaning your wok after cooking a meal only requires you rinse the pan with hot water and then dry it with a clean dish towel or a paper towel. If you were to scrub the wok with soap, you would risk loosing the seasoning your pan has acquired over time.
- When your wok has especially hard to remove food stuck on it, simply rinse it with hot water and place it back on your burner on high heat. After the food can be easily wiped off, take the wok off the stove and once again rinse it with hot water.
How to Remove Rust From Your Wok
- If rust has accumulated on your wok, you will need to use steel wool to thoroughly scrub it off. However before you start scrubbing, rinse the wok out with hot water.
- Next, using the steel wool, get to business by scouring the areas where rust is present. Unfortunately, this will remove your wok's seasoning, which means you'll need to re-season it after you've gotten rid of all the rust.
- Once you've managed to eliminate the rust from your wok, clean it with soap and water. To avoid further rust coat the pan with a thin layer of oil.
