Making a salad can not only be easy, but results in a tasty dish. However, not only do some salads taste great, they can look like works of art! Want to impress a friend with a beautiful looking meal? Check out this Wildflower Salad.

The ingredients for this salad are divided into three sections. First is the basic ingredients, while not all required, this is what creates the basis for your salad. You can use any combination of these in order to create your perfect salad base!

Basic Ingredients:

  • Lettuce (romaine, iceberg, whatever type you prefer)
  • tender baby leaves
  • spinach
  • dandelion greens

The next list of ingredients is herbs that can be purchased fresh or harvested from your herb garden. Fresh herbs taste the best! They should be either cut or chopped finely for best results.

  • Parsley
  • Chives and the flowers
  • Dill and the flowers
  • Chamomile and the flowers

The third list of ingredients is what makes this Wildflower Salad true to its name. These are flowers that can be found growing wild, or in your own garden! You can use any or all of the ones listed, they are safe. Typically the following ingredient need to be either cut or chopped finely.

  • Violets
  • Dandelion petals
  • Chicory
  • Yucca
  • Violas
  • Pansies
  • Nasturtiums
  • Redbud
  • Lilac petals
  • Crab or Apple Blossom petals (in small quantities only!)

Note: Remember you are not required to use all of these ingredients! Use which ones you have available to you and which ones you end up liking. Trial and error is key. When substituting, use caution. All of these ingredients listed are safe and non-poisonous. Be sure to research if you want to use different types of flowers. Also, if you use any chemical sprays or fertilizers on your garden you shouldn't use those flowers. They may not be safe.

Directions:

  1. Wash the lettuce and divide into bowls.
  2. Wash your chosen ingredients and pat dry.
  3. Top the salad with the amount of these ingredients you want.
  4. Use salad dressing of your choice. (Tip: Consider using a light dressing like oil and vinegar or poppy seed)
